Membership Cards – The gift that keep on giving

With Christmas just around the corner, you may be thinking about what gifts your customers can purchase for their friends and family. They could, of course, consider a notebook, a diary or even resort to money – it’s easy and they know people will use it but it isn’t really special.

Have you considered membership cards as a gifting option?

You may already offer membership to customers but packaging it up as a gift could be a new way forward.

Increasingly people are moving towards experiences, memorable presents that they love giving and they know the recipient will be delighted to receive. It shows thought and a real understanding of the person you are buying for and creates that warm, fuzzy feeling we associate with Christmas. And, with membership, it isn’t an experience they can simply enjoy once, but over and over again.

When looking at this as an option, consider how you can delight the recipient. A simple paper voucher printed on a home printer, is ok, it does the job but does it create that wow? A personalised plastic card, packaged in a gift box, with a brochure or welcome guide about your product and service and even an added value gift, will most definitely wow. It doesn’t have to be hugely expensive, just considered.

One of our clients, the Tate, offers membership both to customers and as a gift. Their membership includes free access to events, special member-only events, subscription to their magazine, a discount off shop spend and more. Their membership pack includes the personalised card which we dispatch for them alongside their branded collateral. They even, at time of ordering, allow a reminder for renewal to come to you – the giver of the gift or the recipient.

Membership cards can provide ongoing income

Once someone purchases membership for you once, you then also have the potential income from renewals. If you already have a membership programme in place you will no doubt have a renewals programme to maximise retention. This can also be applied to the gift purchase of a membership so the initial effort of setting up the gift membership programme will reap it’s rewards in the long run.
